It is with profound sadness that Middle Harbour Yacht Club mourns the passing of our dear friend and esteemed member, Gordon Ketelbey, on 31 July 2026. Gordon’s story was one of adventure, achievement, and immense generosity, leaving an indelible mark on sailing in Australia and beyond.
Arriving from South Africa in the 1980s, Gordon embraced his new home, building both a family and a successful Australasian business. His sailing journey was epic from the start, crossing oceans to reach Australia. He quickly found his competitive home at MHYC, where his passion for “real racing” in one-design fleets flourished. Over decades, his yachts—from *Jack Guy* and *Wadadli* to the renowned *Zen* series—became icons on the racecourse.
Gordon’s record was extraordinary: a three-time NSW IRC Champion, a veteran award winner, and a fierce international competitor across Asia, Europe, and the United States. His 2025 Admiral’s Cup campaign with the TP52 *Zen* for Australia was a highlight, followed by podium finishes at Saint-Tropez and a strong Rolex Middle Sea Race performance.
Yet, these trophies only tell half the tale. Gordon’s true legacy lies in the people he inspired. A natural mentor, he built loyal, joyful crews and generously opened the world of offshore racing to novices. Countless sailors owe their careers to his encouragement and trust. His contribution to club life was equally steadfast—serving on committees, volunteering tirelessly, and stepping in when needed, most recently securing MHYC’s new start boat. Characteristically, he refused any naming honour; instead, it will be called *Legacy*.
That is precisely what Gordon Ketelbey leaves: a lasting legacy of sportsmanship, friendship, and quiet benevolence. Middle Harbour Yacht Club extends its deepest sympathies to his wife, Kim, his family, and his vast network of friends. We were privileged to sail with him, learn from him, and call him our own.
